Renovations for the New York Intern Program (25)
On August 27th Intercession will welcome, together with St. Mary's Church in Manhattanville, a group of young adults who will be living with us in an intentional community and serving in various social agencies in the city. The people of Intercession and our staff have been working hard to welcome them in our parish house. Here are pictures of the renovation in the kitchen of Gates House. -
Need for Organ Restoration (47)
BECOME AN ORGAN DONOR Adopt a Pipe! The Intercession Organ, that is! The great Aeolian Skinner Organ has served the parish of the Church of the Intercession since 1968. It is the second instrument that has been housed behind the grand organ case, designed by Bertram Goodhue. It has been heard on Sundays, and at great occasions. It is one of the great pipe organs in Harlem. 20 years have passed since the organ had any major maintence, and 43 years since it was installed. It is riddled with loose pipes, silent notes, and malfunctioning equipment. Left unchecked, the ongoing deterioration will render the instrument completely unplayable. There are 3,837 Pipes in the Intercession Organ, and we need a sponsor for each of them. We have 2 great organ curators to assist in the project. Richard Kurtz, our organ curator since 1983, and Douglass Hunt, organ curator at Saint Bartholomew ‘s on Park Avenue and The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, where he lead the restoration of the Great Organ after the 2001 fire. Join the Restoration Campaign. Your gift large or small will help revive the ailing Intercession Organ. Adopt a Pipe: Become an organ donor of $50 or more, and we will name a pipe after you or your designated honoree. You will receive a handsome certificate of recognition identifying your adopted pipe. Flutes $50-150 (12 different types) Principals $151-200 (12 different types) Reeds and Strings $250-400 (17 different types) Festival Trumpet $500-1000 32’ Pedal Stops $1000-1500 (2 different types) Console $1600- 2000 Organ Case $2500 and up -
Projects needing your support (17)
Our bell tower and our bay window are in dire need of restoration and and preservation. The roof of the bell tower is compromised and the bay window has been separating from the building. We are looking for sponsors and donors to help us complete these projects. -
Bequeath from Vera Gordon (3)
Our dear sister Vera Gordon left a generous gift from our church. With it we have restored the heating system in the Lady Chapel. We have also installed a new radiator in the hall for our Sunday School and installed a washer dryer for the altar linens. We will be purchasing new runners for the ambulatories and painting around the Goodhue monument. -
Energy Efficient light-bulbs in church (2)
Thanks to a gift from the Diocese of New York we were able to install new CFC light-bulbs in our church. The people have commented "now we can see the Prayer Book and Hymnal!". Thanks to the Diocese for this grant! We also disconnected our lighting system from an old dimmer system so that the CFC's could be used. -
Sump Pumps in Crypt (5)
Our crypt chapel has for many years suffered because of flooding, especially in the rainy season. Thanks to income we received from the movie and photography rental we have been able to install five industrial size pumps in the crypt that have made a big difference with the water and humidity in our beautiful crypt. -
Leaders and Gutters (2)
Thanks to the work of assemblyman Denny Farrell our social outreach arm, Intercession Community Services Council, Inc., received a grant to repair the leaders and gutters of the gym. We have completed this work on the north side and will continue working with the south side heads and leaders. This work will help continue offering community services like the basketball for youth, chess classes, jump rope, Girl Scouts, Native American Cultural Center presentations, AA meetings, among others. We thank Walter Sedovic architectural firm (http://www.modernruins.com/modernRuins.htm), Burda Construction (http://burdaconstruction.com/), and Greg Miller from Landmark Slate and Copper Works for their dedicated and professional service. -
Gift from Audrey Glover (4)
Thanks to a generous gift of parishioner Audrey Glover we have refinished the floor at our church, restored the doors of the parish hall and crypt chapel, and have new doors leading the common room hall. We are working on restoring the pew that was in the hall lobby.
